Nic-free? No such thing...

Prompted by a Twitter conversation, I am moved to explain why vapers habitually cite Aubergines (eggplant if you're USAnian) and other solanaceae in the dietary intake of that most addictive of all substances (it's more addictive than heroin, you know. Uh-huh), Nicotine.

Consider this tweet...
https://twitter.com/stopsmokingw/status/804615342228017152

Which tells us: "Did you know that if you don’t smoke this weekend, you’ll be nicotine-free by Monday? #FridayFeeling".

Well, it's more than likely a lie, and here's why.

Most folks (certainly in the market this tweet was aimed at) eat a relatively balanced diet. In that diet will be tomatoes, potatoes, aubergines and other members of the Solanaceae family - the Nightshades, if you will. They all, to some degree, contain nicotine. Now, remember, Nicotine is, according to those folks who want you to be nicotine free, more addictive than heroin. Some say there's "no safe level of nicotine" (yes, we've all heard it). According to them, the slightest whiff of Nic will send you on a slippery slope to dissolution, calamity, enduring a life of endless and incurable smoking related diseases, only to die alone, disfigured, minus a limb or two, with only one tooth in your head and roughly resembling a skeleton with a thin covering of pale, colourless skin...

But I digress (only a little). Becoming Nic-free is about as possible as being 100% vegan in a world where fivers and computers have animal products in them. For most folks, that's not an issue, but for out Anti Nicotine and Tobacco Zealots, only a world inhabited by 100% nicotine-free folks is acceptable.

But they ignore the truths that are there for all to see. Even your two year old gets a dose of nicotine every day. (Chips, crisps, mashed spud, tomato sauce, lasagne, bolognese, fish pie - the list goes on and on). Is that a problem?

Well, if you listen to the ANTZ, of course it is. Nicotine (any level) addles the adolescent brain. (No it doesn't - obviously). "Children" (apparently, young people up to the age of 24 - and that upper bound is rising year on year - again, we've all seen it) who use nicotine will become hooked in thirty seconds flat and progress to ever more strong concentrations, will take up smoking and die a horrible death. Except they don't, of course. Again, we've seen the studies.

So, you'd be forgiven for thinking that, perhaps, the ANTZ haven't got a clue what they're on about. You simply cannot ever be "nicotine-free". Even if you don't smoke, don't vape, and don't chew Nic lozenges or chew Nic gum, you're still getting nicotine.

Moreover, if you used to smoke, vape or etc... and you no longer do, then that Nic from the spuds and tomato sauce or whatever doesn't send you screaming for a fag or a vape.

So yes, we vapers do have this habit of "educating" (OK, sometimes rather more forcibly than we might otherwise) folks who make stupid statements like that one above. And no, we're not likely to stop any time soon, unless, of course, folks stop being idiots and denying that nicotine is part of everyone's diet. In that respect, it's not a poison, it's not the most addictive substance on the planet, it isn't more addictive than heroin (I know from experience). In short, it's not the monster they've propagandised us all to believe.

In fact, it's no worse than caffeine. And that's another can of worms to open another day.
